Stage 2 - The method - How do we enter altered states of consciousness?
Welcome back to Mind Beyond Matter. Now that we’ve covered the foundations of altered states in Stage 1, it’s time to start putting theory into practice and take our first real step into experiential practice. Altered states provide a gateway to deeper layers of awareness, and Stage 2 focuses on how to access these states, introducing meditation techniques designed to shift perception beyond the ordinary waking mind. We explore brainwave states, the role of intention, and the mechanics of deep trance and visualisation, setting the stage for the psycho-technologies we will use throughout the course to control, enhance and deepen your experiences. By learning to quiet the thinking mind and enter altered states, we prepare ourselves for encounters with the deeper structures of consciousness, which we will explore in Stage 3 and beyond.
What You’ll Learn in This Stage:
The focus of this session is threefold:
- Understanding the function of meditation in achieving altered states.
- Developing key skills to still the mind and shift consciousness, aided by sound technology.
- Preparing yourself to enter altered states in a controlled, grounded, and safe manner.
This is where we move beyond theory and begin the practical process of shifting your consciousness. By the end of this lesson, you will have the tools to begin your first guided meditation practice.
Please start by watching the video below:
The guided meditations for this lesson are below:
The first Theta guided meditation takes you step-by-step through the Mind Beyond Matter process, using sound technology to entrain your brain into a Theta brainwave state. Practice it daily if you can, as each time you use it, the effects will become more and more powerful. The aim is to feel your sense of awareness separate from your physical senses. You may feel this as a physical sensation of floating, expanding or vibrating. Once you have mastered this 'mind awake, body asleep' state, you can then employ the psycho-technologies in later lessons to navigate the pycho-spiritual domain effectively.
This Visualisation and Grounding meditation is to practice visualisation techniques, but it can also be used whenever you need to reconnect to the physical domain. It is useful after a particularly intense or overwhelming altered-states experience, or if you just want to generally relax or re-energise.
Summary of content:
Meditation: What It Is and Why It Matters
Deep meditation is the gateway to altered states—but many people misunderstand what it really is. In its simplest form, meditation is:
“A mental technique to clear the mind of distraction, achieving heightened focus or states of pure awareness.”
While modern society often sees meditation as just a stress-relief tool, its true potential goes far deeper. Throughout history, meditation has been used not only for relaxation but for accessing profound states of consciousness, enhancing perception, and exploring non-ordinary realities.
Key skills required for effective meditation:
✔ Breath Control – Using the breath as a focal point to calm the mind.
✔ Physical Relaxation – Releasing tension to facilitate detachment from bodily awareness.
✔ Mental Stillness – Silencing the internal chatter (the "monkey mind").
✔ Mindfulness and Presence – Learning to observe thoughts without attachment.
✔ Visualization – Strengthening the ability to generate internal imagery.
✔ Concentration and Focus – Training the mind to sustain deep states of awareness.
Developing these skills prepares you for deep altered states. The better you are at meditation, the easier it becomes to enter and navigate expanded states of consciousness.
The History and Power of Meditation
Meditation is one of the oldest psycho-technologies in human history, appearing in spiritual traditions across the world:
- Vedic Traditions (c. 1500 BCE) – Early Hindu texts describe meditation as a path to dissolving the ego and merging with higher consciousness.
- Buddhism (5th Century BCE) – The Buddha formalized meditation into structured practices like Vipassana and Samatha, aimed at liberation from suffering.
- Ancient Greece – Philosophers like Pythagoras and Plato used meditation for introspection and wisdom.
- Western Revival – In the 19th and 20th centuries, figures like Madame Blavatsky, Yogananda, and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi reintroduced meditation to the West.
- Modern Scientific Validation – Research has shown that meditation reduces stress, enhances focus, and alters brainwave activity, making it a valuable tool for both personal growth and expanded consciousness.
Meditation has persisted throughout history because it works—as a method for self-discovery, transformation, and accessing non-ordinary states of consciousness.
The Five Levels of Meditation
There are different depths to meditation, each offering unique benefits:
- Relaxation & Grounding – Reducing stress, releasing tension, preparing the body.
- Focused Attention & Mental Clarity – Strengthening concentration and reducing internal distractions.
- Heightened Awareness & Self-Observation – Observing the mind from a detached perspective.
- Expansion of Consciousness & Insight – Exploring deeper layers of awareness, accessing subconscious content.
- Spiritual Development & Transcendence – Experiencing unity, dissolving the ego, connecting with the broader field of consciousness.
As we progress in this course, we’ll be working our way down this list, moving from basic relaxation to deep spiritual exploration.
The Mind Beyond Matter Process
This course follows a structured method for entering altered states:
1) Preparation
- Energy Locker – Mentally storing distractions and worries.
- Intention Setting – Clearly stating your goal for the meditation.
- Energy Forcefield – Creating a protective barrier to ensure a safe experience
2) Entering the Altered State
- Resonant Tuning – Using sound and vibration to shift awareness.
- Progressive Relaxation – Releasing all muscular tension.
- Hypnagogia – Reaching the "mind awake, body asleep" state.
3) Psycho-Spiritual Exploration
- Entering the psycho-spiritual domain, where visualisation becomes interactive.
- Navigating experiences that emerge, from symbols to encounters with non-human intelligences.
- Engaging in deep self-exploration and intuitive insight retrieval.
4) Integration
- Gradual return to normal waking reality.
- Journaling and reflection on what was experienced.
Each stage is carefully designed to guide you into deeper altered states while maintaining safety and control.
The Role of Sound Technology
A key element of this course is binaural beats and sound frequency entrainment. This method synchronizes brainwaves to specific frequencies, making it easier to enter Theta and Delta states, which are associated with:
- Deep meditation
- Vivid visualization
- Increased intuitive insight
- Expanded states of consciousness
The guided meditations in this course use carefully engineered binaural frequencies to help your brain shift into optimal altered states more easily.
Your Homework: Practicing the Theta Meditation
Now it’s time to begin your practice. I encourage you to:
✅ Practice the Theta guided meditation every day this week (if possible).
✅ Use this intention:
“I am more than my mind, I am more than my body. Through altered states of consciousness, I enter a space free of mental clutter; of serenity, peace, and healing.”
✅ Journal your experiences:
- What did you experience? (Sights, sensations, emotions)
- What did you learn?
✅ Share your experiences: If you’re comfortable, share your reflections in the discussion below this lesson.
Don't worry if you don't get anything too profound at this stage. You are practicing relaxing into the mind awake, body asleep state so you can enter this state quickly and easily.
Bringing It All Together
- Meditation is the safest and most effective way to access altered states.
- It has been used for thousands of years as a tool for spiritual and mental expansion.
- This course will guide you through a structured method to explore altered states safely.
- Practice and consistency are the keys to success.
I’ll see you in the next lesson—until then, begin your meditative practice and see where it takes you!
